I totally agree Jo, that's what I meant by saying Tom and Phin are the full story of 1 character, that's assuming that Phin does end up assimilating.
Because Tom's brother at one point says that when Tom returned at first he was wild, so much like how Phineas is. But yea, its really clever and an
interesting way of telling the story without having to use too many pages.

In the epilogue, doesn't it hint that Phineas continued to be a bit "different" at times? Does the screenplay explain how Tom came to leave the
indian tribe?
I agree that Phineas is used to tell Tom's story.
...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening.

Yea, his family searched for him and never stopped looking, so the Comanche's lied to him about that. But yea he was found and brought back to his family,
I think much like how Phineas was also. And yea Jack talks of how Tom was wild when he came back, so there are definite parrallels there. Also it's pretty
cool how from the script, you see how the whole journey of being a captive is different for boys and girls. Men went through what Tom and Phin did and women
did what Rachel did.

Rachel's story is sad -- torn between her birth family and her new one, among her original captors. The only parallel with May is that Rachel fought to be
with her child, among the people who saw her grow into a woman, albeit young in age. When May realized that her daughter chose a life of her own, I think May
in a sense felt like how a mother must feel when her flock leaves the nest.
This role is a strong featured one, too, and will compete with the Phineas characterization. |

Jo wrote:The role of Rachel will be a difficult one to pull off. She's 14 but basically, a woman. She's been married, had her husband die and had a child already and now has to fight to save her child at the same time that she's discovering/meeting her birth mother and having to make a big decision about that. Whichever young actress they get to play her, she'll need to have some strong acting chops and look like Rachel Weisz, that's going to be tough. They may have to sacrifice the look-a-like part to get the acting chops. Yet, in order for May to really know she's her daughter, she has to look like her unless they use a device like a necklace or something. I think this will be one of the harder roles to cast. |

Would love to know if they will cast an unknown or one of the young Hollywood teens, like Abigail Breslin or Dakota Fanning (my bet is a newcomer).

If they did use one of them I'd think Dakota because she's a little older so could bring a more mature presence to the role plus she's a little better at serious dramatic roles. She'd have to have dark hair though in order to look more like Rachel Weisz. It may be too small a part for one of them though. |

It will probably be a newcomer, but I'd prefer Saoirse Ronan over Dakota Fanning *for sure*.

Had Anna Paquin still been a slightly older version of the child star (maybe the same age as Rogue in the first Wolverine movie?) who won an Oscar for The
Piano, I think she would have been perfect for this role. I think she shares the same sensitivity as Rachel Weisz's screen presence suggests...and I could
see how she can look like a bit like Rachel. Too bad she is all grown up!

I actually did think about Saoirse Ronan for this, but then I think they're going the unkonwn route. Finding new talent and I would think that Madeline is
good at that since she casted Rob before he was even any body so there must have been something good about him that she saw prior to the Twilight Boom.

To carry one what we were talking about in the other thread, I think this thread is more appropriate.
Phin's role is small yet extremely important, as it completes that Tom/Phin continuation of the same person tactic. Now Australia could have gone a similar route with Nullah being formed to assimilate to be White but WW2 was the big interference of that. I haven't read the script in a while, but have been wanting to revisit it even more and more lately, man why is this movie so far away, lol. |

There are definitely more Phineas/Tom connections than Nullah/Drover connections. Plus Phineas is May's actual son and we see the after effects of being
assimilated into a completely different environment... the drover wasn't too different from the whites.
And yes... we have such a looooooong wait. :( |

As Narrows has posted elsewhere, Garret Dillahunt has been cast as "Jack",
Tom's brother.
To me, he seems fairly similar to Hugh in looks, build and age. Dress them in similar clothes with similar hair and it would be hard for most people to tell the difference. This seems good for brothers, but it also helps us to see Jack as representing who Tom would have been if he hadn't been taken.
...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening.

Garret looks like a great choice. I don't watch TV that often, so I'm not sure of his acting abilities, but looks-wise he's perfect. I'm
impressed with their decision!

I think they could easily pass for brothers. And, speaking of how Tom would have been if he hadn't been taken, after
re-reading the script last weekend I had a few thoughts. I think one of the challenges for Hugh as an actor and for Madeleine as the director is what does Tom
sound like? He was born in Kentucky, spent some of his early childhood in Texas then the bulk of his childhood he was raised by and spoke Comache. He had to
relearn English but still uses Comanche a lot in his job as a translator and seems most comfortable with the Comanche part of himself. Will he sound like
someone who speaks English as a second language? Will he have a Texas twang with a hint of something foreign? Any thoughts?

He was Tommy Lee Jones deputy? partner? not sure what he was called, in No Country For Old Men. He was a Texan so that will be familiar. He is/was in a lot of
TV shows that I don't/didn't watch too.

It looks like Garret is involved in developmental theatre -- pretty much like Chicago Dramatists which handled the original production of A STEADY RAIN. I wonder if Hugh saw him in this recent off-Broadway show and suggested his name? http://www.nytw.org/about.asp Speaking of which, Pat -- the New York Theatre Workshop is the same organization which is sponsoring a big benefit night with A STEADY RAIN. |
