So I realized it's very slow right now, and thought it would be fun to discuss movies we've seen this year. I'll give you my top 5 so far....
1) Up: a very emotional movie (it had me laughing and crying), with very endearing characters. You all should definitely check it out. 2) The Young Victoria: I am a huge fan of period costume, so I loved this. Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, and Jim Broadbent were great. Plus it was a timeless love story, which I love. :) 3) The Brother's Bloom: hilarious, quirky, off-beat; Rachel gives a *fabulous* performance. Drags a little at the end, though. 4) Star Trek: very entertaining with charismatic stars 5) Coraline: it wasn't anything too special, but the animation was great and the first half was awesome. |

I haven't seen many movies this year, Watchmen I absolutely hated with all my heart, Wolverine was quite enjoyable for me, and I think that's all
I've seen, lol.

Is it bad that the only 2009 film I've seen was Wolverine? However, I'm going to catch up on a few over the next two weeks during two very long sits on
a plane. Any recommendations out of the following?
12 Rounds Confessions of a Shopaholic Gomorrah International Last Chance Harvey Paul Blart: Mall Cop Pink Panther 2 17 Again Duplicity I Love You Man Push Sunshine Cleaning
...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening.

Hengist, I haven't seen any of those on your list! I've only seen "Wolverine" (naturally) and "Star Trek" (in IMAX) - because of
hubby.
Next week I will see "Transformers 2" (saw the first one and loved it, plus I watched some of the TV show as a kid) and the week after, "Public Enemies" (because I like that type of movie - period piece and about a real person - not because of who's in it). I *might* see "Harry Potter", only because I saw all the others but I'm losing interest. Later this year, if I can convince hubby (not sure I will succeed on all of these), I want to see "Amelia" (same reason as PE), maybe "Nine", "The Lovely Bones" and "Sherlock Holmes" (there's that period thing again). |

Harry Potter is a family tradition so we'll see that no matter what. No interest in Transformers but I'm tempted by Public Enemies but may wait to see
how people like it. I want to see The Time Traverler's Wife even if it's no good. Note sure about Sherlock Holmes - RDJ looks dashing but should they
be treating Holmes and Watson in that fashion?
...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening.

I read The Time Travelers Wife but no way in hell is hubby going to see that and it's not really a "must-see" for me to see in the theater, but I
will definitely watch it when it comes on TV. Now if another Aussie instead of Bana (who I do like) was in it I would be there opening weekend...

I HATED Transformers 1 so I will not be there at all for the 2nd one, btw the letter on TMZ from Michael Bay to the studio is quite interesting.
I read the script for The Lovely Bones and man, that's going to be an amazing movie if it shakes out right which I'm sure it will, still hate the fact that Hugh had to pass because the part of the Dad is really good. |

Oh, I hated Watchmen! It is probably the worst movie I've ever seen in theaters! I liked Wolverine, too, and I really don't understand why it got such
bad reviews.
I haven't seen any of those Hengist, but if I chose I would see Sunshine Cleaning (for Amy and Emily -- it hasn't come out anywhere near me!) and The International (because I like Naomi). My fiance loves superhero movies, so we have tickets to the midnight showing for Transformers, and we'll be seeing Public Enemies (my #1 anticipated of the summer) the first day it comes out. I cannnn't wait to see it! Other summer releases I plan on seeing in theaters: Harry Potter, Adam, 500 Days of Summer, and The Time Traveler's Wife (which doesn't look like it will live up to the book unfortunately.. looks more like The Notebook 2). Others I'm really looking forward to: 1939 Agora All Good Things An Education Bright Star (!!) Broken Embraces Brothers Coco avant Chanel The Edge of Love The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Last Night The Last Station Le dernier vol de Lancaster The Lovely Bones Nine Ondine Public Enemies Sherlock Holmes Shutter Island Sunshine Cleaning |

This year so far the only one I remember is Wolverine, probably cause I saw it several times. If we're covering
slightly more than this year I saw Defiance in December and loved it. And of course Australia in November. Will be seeing Ice Age 3 next
week, Harry Potter in July and Julie & Julia in August which I'm really looking forward to.
Oops, forgot I also saw Taken and Slumdog Millionaire this year.

I've come to the conclusion that an aeroplane is a bad place to watch a film. It's hard to follow even a simple plot with interuptions for meals,
requests for seatbelts and queuing for the washroom. Dumb action movies often work better than anything with dialogue. Anyway here's my report:
- The International - started off well but it turned out to be pretty generic and I can't remember much about it just a week later. Clive Owen was ok but Naomi Watts was hardly in it (unless her scenes were cut). The relationship between the two seemed non-existent. - Confessions of a Shopoholic - fluff but with an appealing cast. Isla Fisher is attractive and funny and Hugh Dancy is cute but wasted in this kind of movie. - Last Chance Harvey - how could anyone fail to love Emma Thompson? The story was light and predictable but who cares when you have Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman showing how it's done. - Duplicity - I liked this better than The International although it didn't really work for me. I didn't think the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Clive Owen was good enough and that made it all a bit pointless. I'm coming to the conclusion that Clive Owen makes rather a dull leading man. - Push - Dakota Fanning and Chris Evans in a stylish "Heroes"-type action movie set in Hong Kong. It even has Cliff Curtis* in a small role. I enjoyed this. It didn't matter that I couldn't make sense of the plot because the rules kept changing. *Cliff Curtis is an actor from New Zealand who seems to play anything from arabs to south americans in international films. I'd like to see some of his NZ films as I'm sure he has a lot more to offer. He played the girl's father in "Whale Rider", Tomas's sidekick in the 1500 segments of "The Fountain" and the pschycologist in Danny Boyle's "Sunshine".
...without Baz and his crazy vision, I don't think it'd be happening.

Hopefully I'll see Last Chance Harvey at some point or another.. I don't really care to see the rest.
Added to my list: Transformers 2 -- If you didn't like the first, you won't like this, and vice versa. My fiance and I had a grand time and the audience was in the mood to laugh, which definitely helped with the spirit of things. It dragged near the end, but overall an enjoyable, brainless experience. Public Enemies -- LOOOOVED THIS! It's gotten mixed reviews but I loved the story from start to finish. The best part is the romance between Depp and Cotillard, who are both fantastic in this. |

I also saw Transformers 2 and Public Enemies.
Transformers 2 - IMO, all it is is one big video game. I took my 13 year old nephew. His 14 year old brother already saw i and didn't care for it. His brother concurred. He said Plus it was way too long - but I don't hear people complaining about that the way they did about Australia! Public Enemies - I enjoyed it, but I think it would help if you knew the actual backstory of John Dillinger. I was getting confused at points and hubby (who did know the backstory) kept telling me who people were and explaining what they did and what really happened. Also I got confused a few times since they went to some scenes without explanation as to what was going on. I *might* see Harry Potter in a few weeks since I saw all the others.

I saw The Proposal last week. It was a typical rom-com but funny with a few genuine laugh-out-loud moments. Love!!!! Betty White, and she was
just precious in the movie.
Seeing Ice Age3 this week, Harry Potter on the 18th and Julie & Julia next month that I know of. Watched Defiance again. I decided to rent it from NetFlix before buying it, just to be sure I want to. Definitely will be buying it. The special features included a feature with the children & grandchildren of the brothers. They showed video of the brothers & wives later in life, very moving. It was mentioned in the feature that the granddaughter made a documentary about them so I think I'll look for that too. I do love true stories when they're done well. Especially true stories about things that matter. Liev Schreiber, Daniel Craig and Jamie Bell are so good as the brothers. |

I just saw Up and man that movie is freaking AWESOME!!! Had me bawling like a baby at the end.
I've been trying for the past few days to watch Appaloosa and I can't get through it like at all, I'm still about 30 minutes in and its been a week and I feel no desire to watch the rest of it. |
